Beginning Russian & Russian 1BGeneralBeginning Russian will be a beginning course based around the book “Beginner`s Russian” which was used to teach the language at the High School. Within the first semester we will all learn to read using the Cyrillic alphabet. It is not as tough as it looks. Some people start reading within hours. We will discuss in Russian the topics typical for beginners. Books do not need to be purchased. This course will be combined with Russian 1B and continue practicing reading drills in the cyrillic alphabet. The purpose is to achieve complete fluency in reading in Cyrillic by the end of the Russian 1B course. To expand the vocabulary and basic sentence structures the "Easy Russian Reader" will be used with emphasis on story telling. At every lesson about 10-12 "survival Russian " phrases will be practiced.***If you play the piano, we could learn a song or two in your target language and you can accompany! This is one of the heritage languages of the area, and we are planning to add more.Fall 2026 -
Beginning SpanishGeneralThis introductory Spanish course will teach you basic grammar and vocabulary necessary for travel or interaction within this country, where Spanish is the most popular foreign language and heritage language. Students will be able to introduce themselves, to speak about their families, jobs, and interests. You will learn to ask questions while shopping or travelling. We will practice counting money in Spanish. English as a Second LanguageGeneralIf your mother tongue is not English, join a class for English learners in Cloquet community Education. Even if you are already learning English on internet, it is good to attend a regular class once a week. Your instructor holds a MN license for teaching English learners from all over the world and have done it for many years. In some languages she can even provide teaching support in your native language. The week day for our meetings is dependent on those who plan to attend. The first class will take place at the location and time listed.Fall 2026 -
Beginning Finnish & Finnish 1BGeneralBeginning Finish will prepare and practice simple conversations in small groups. Some basic grammar will be explained. Instructor's mother tongue is Finnish (Karelian dialect). She took the Finnish course at the Petrozavodsk State University. We will discuss in Finnish the topics typical for beginners. Books do not need to be purchased.This course will be combined with Finnish 1B an use "First Finnish Reader for Beginners" Enni Saarinen mor intensely and will incorporate the TPR story telling method into each class. This will expand your vocabulary and sentence structures necessary for communication. Each week we will practice phonics to avoid reading Finnish words using American reading rules. 1-12 "survival phrases" will be taught in every class.***If you play the piano, we could learn a song or two in your target language and you can accompany! Beginning German & German 1BGeneralThe course will start with the vocabulary and structures common for tourist purposes. Basic grammar structures will also be taught. They will enable the students to make correct simple sentences and allow us to read and discuss easy books. The instructor lived in Germany for seven years and has a lot of first-hand cultural experience and has two Masters in methods of teaching foreign languages.This course will be combined with German 1B and will continue working along the same guidelines that have been explained during the beginning course. We will use the Book Zeit für Grammatik that the instructor successfully used in Germany teaching Ukrainian refugees. To facilitate faster speaking development, we will use Raine Blay's technique of storytelling and tackle one of his books "Arme Anna"***If you play the piano, we could learn a song or two in your target language and you can accompany!
